Pine Lake Series One Through Three

These three are all ACEO (2.5 by 3.5 inches) paintings. It’s been difficult to work this small for me. To further that, I don’t typically do landscapes (although I plan to in the future), and I allowed myself only an hour of total working time on each of these. I ended up taking about 45 minuets on each in the end.

At some point in the near future I’ll likely be reopening my etsy page, starting with some of these very small, fast paintings. And adding my back-log of paintings, drawings, and misc art stuff. I figure if I allow myself to branch out in this way I may be less likley to get lost in the swarm of artists. We’ll see how it goes

WIP number 2 for the magnolia

WIP number 2 for the magnolia

I threw out my back last Thursday. I could barely walk and had to get my wife to come home from work to care for me. As such, I’ve not done too much other than rest and what you can see in the somewhat blurry image above for the last four days.

Work in Progress shot of magnolia painting by Matthew Stiles

Work in Progress shot of magnolia painting

Finally got enough stuff dealt with that I’ve started painting again. I’ve started doing some Munsell exercises in an attempt to hone my skills better. It took 2 and a half hours to mix my first batch of N5. I soon realized I cannot expect to get neutrals with a piece of green glass over my neutral scale! After that I the set out in around a half hour. I haven’t gotten back to it since then though.

The biggest thing I’ve quickly gleaned is that I need not to hurry my under drawings and value paintings so much, they’re important in a more through development. I do so love to just dive into color however, so I’ll see what truly comes of it. Once I actually get the next set of materials for the munsell exercises I’ll post my results.

No mediums in this piece so far. I’ve also focused on a rather limited palette, Fanchon (Naphtol) red (which I’m attempt to use up and won’t be replacing as I prefer other reds to this one), lead white, yellow ocher, ultramarine blue, and, mars black. I went ahead and added viridian green during my second session to extend my green range for the leaves and the mars black with yellow ocher was too dull, but the ultramarine too bright. I think I’ll switch out the mars black for ivory for the latter layers but perhaps not, still undecided on if it’s necessary or not at this point.
