Never have bothered to do one of these before, so I finally bit the bullet and took the time. I used to have all higher quality paints, but after college I had used most of them up. That Christmas my grandfather bought me some Windsor & Newton Winton oils. It was a nice gesture and admission that I was indeed an artist, but it had been so long since he painted that he hadn’t even heard of hue colors or bought them because they were W&N. (He painted at a time when they were higher grade paints.) I would describe Winton colors as better than nothing, but not worth there poor handling. As soon as I can afford to (or they’re used up) they will be replaced.
I was quite interested in the difference between some of the pigments that held the same names but differed greatly in color. The winners in difference were Williamsburg and Winton yellow ochre. Williamsburg had a much lighter cast and mixes much cleaner than the Winton. Truthfully all the earths between the brands were very different in color. Winton being duller, yellowish, and poorer at tinting.
A color you probably won’t see up there is Williamsburg Turkish Green Earth. It’s a very long paint. Too oily, but it’s a nice dull green.
The pizza box was prepared with some clear acrylic medium from Goldens I’ve had laying around for awhile. Probably should have done another coat, but didn’t feel like it since the archival quality of a pizza box isn’t really that important to me. It did suck some oil from the paints still though.
